A steady year for Norwegian pelagic industry in a turbulent year

In spite the turbulence in the export industry, the Norwegian pelagic industry proves steady course in 2009. Total annual turnover in 2009 for pelagic species was 5,7 billion NOK. The value of the first hand sales in 2009 sums up to a total value of 5,7 billion NOK in comparison to 5,75 billion in 2008 and 4,95 billion on 2007. 

The value consists of a total of 2 billion tonnes pelagic fish, all sold trough the electronic auction of Norges Sildesalgslag.The Norwegian spring spawning herring and the North-sea herring make a total of 1,15 billion tonnes added to a value of 2,9 billion NOK. 

This amounts to 50% of the total turnover in 2009. The mackerel sums up to a total value of 1,7 billion NOK, composing 205.000 tonnes. Norwegian fishermen traded catches of a total value of 4,75 billion NOK in 2009, while foreign fishermen traded 187.000 tonnes of pelagic fish, amounted to 950 billion NOK.

Of the total 5,7 billion NOK the main part of 5,1 billion was for consumption purposes. Of a total Norwegian seafood export valued to 44,7 billion NOK, Norwegian pelagic species sum to 8 billion of the total value.

This is an increase of 12% compared to 2008.
