Strong westerly winds reaching storm force on the blue whiting grounds have affected fisheries in the western areas during the latter half of the week.
Blue whiting
A total of 3,040 tonnes of blue whiting for human consumption and 7,340 tonnes for fishmeal and oil were reported last week. Altogether, 10,380 tonnes of blue whiting were landed. To date, 172,259 tonnes have been caught out of a total quota of 238,736 tonnes. Six vessels are currently operating in western waters once weather conditions improve, and some fishing activity is therefore expected in the coming week. In addition, some of the pelagic trawlers are expected to postpone blue whiting fishing until the edge fishery (“kantafiske”) later in spring and summer.
Horse mackerel
Two good catches of horse mackerel were reported last week. On Tuesday, Kaspar reported 15 tonnes with an average size of 470 grams, caught off Rogaland. On Thursday, Elias reported 11 tonnes with an average size of 500 grams, caught in Vestland and landed at Global Florø. So far this year, the smaller fleet along the west coast has landed a total of 666 tonnes of horse mackerel.
